The Singularity & Critical Thinking
The concept of the Technological Singularity represents a hypothetical point in the future where artificial intelligence development becomes autonomous and exponential, triggering irreversible and uncontrollable transformations for humanity. However, accepting this theory as a prophetic and inevitable destiny is an error. Critical thinking forces us to rigorously analyze the dogmas and limits of this hypothesis.
1. The Trap of Exponentiality: Exponential Curve vs. S-Curve
Proponents of the Singularity consider that progress follows an uninterrupted exponential evolution. But critical thinking shows us that physical and material systems do not grow infinitely. Real progress usually follows a logistic curve (S-curve): initial exponential growth is limited by hardware, physical, and energetic thresholds, leading to a stable plateau.
2. Intelligence Explosion and Real Bottlenecks
It is assumed that a machine capable of recursive self-improvement will instantly achieve superintelligence. However, optimization is not exclusively a software problem. It involves obtaining data, experimenting in the real world, and managing computational resources. Mathematical limits in solving complex algorithms (NP-hard problems) can drastically slow down this hypothetical explosion.
"Intelligence is not just an autonomous algorithmic variable; it requires energy, physical environment, and empirical interaction to evolve."
3. The Alignment Problem and Anthropomorphic Projection
We often view the Singularity either as messianic salvation or as a malicious cataclysm. Both visions suffer from anthropomorphic projection. An artificial superintelligence system will not possess human desires for power, hate, or selfishness. The danger lies exclusively in the mathematical calibration of its goals (The Alignment Problem).
4. Technological Determinism vs. Social Constructivism
Common theory states that the Singularity is an autonomous process before which we are powerless. But critical thinking reminds us that technology is a product of decisions, resources, and control held by human institutions. The transition to post-scarcity economies or the collapse into totalitarian systems depends entirely on the social and political structures active during the transition.
